Together for ALICE in the Crosscurrents

United Way of Pierce County invites you to attend Together for ALICE: ALICE in the Crosscurrents - An update on Financial Hardship in Washington and Pierce County on  Thursday, August 1, from 9 to 10:30 am.

This is a free virtual town-hall event.

Together with Jim Cooper from United Ways of the Pacific Northwest, and Dr. Stephanie Hoopes, National Director, United For ALICE®, I'll share the 2024 ALICE update on financial hardship in Pierce County. In 2022, financial hardship in Washington and Pierce County continued to be shaped by the conflicting economic forces of the pandemic. Hardship remained substantially undercounted by official measures, and longstanding disparities in hardship by age, race/ethnicity, and household type persisted.

These powerful crosscurrents — COVID-19, inflation, wage growth, and the expansion and expiration of pandemic public assistance — impacted how many Washington households were below the ALICE Threshold of Financial Survival. The ALICE Household Survival Budget is the bare minimum cost of household basics necessary to live and work in the current economy.

With the latest data from the American Community Survey (2022), the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey (2023), and the Federal Reserve Board’s Survey of Household Economics and Decision making (SHED) (2022), this update highlights the conflicting forces that continue to present opportunities for and barriers to, financial stability in Washington.
