Kayleigh Sheen, an employment coach at Bethel’s Center for Strong Families, is making a difference in her community by helping individuals improve their job skills and find fulfilling careers. She recently shared her experience with United Way, giving insights into her work.
“I start by building relationships with clients, understanding their skills and job history, and tailoring job opportunities to fit their individual needs,” she said.
She helps underemployed individuals find additional schooling or job opportunities that will be a good fit. Though she doesn't give financial counseling, Kayleigh works in tandem with the center's financial coach to ensure that clients receive wrap-around services.
Kayleigh primarily works with individuals referred to the center through South Sound 211, but she also collaborates with other community partners like Workforce Central and Palmer Scholars to help clients find employment and navigate resources.
“COVID-19 has had a lasting impact on the people that we work with. Many individuals have realized that they don't want to be in jobs that they are not happy in and are seeking guidance on how to improve their career prospects,” she said.
Kayleigh helps her clients think long term about advancing their careers by developing new skills, such as computer proficiency or hybrid job training, that will allow them to work from home.
Kayleigh's own path to becoming an employment coach was unconventional. She spent ten years as a stay-at-home mom and was out of the workforce before discovering her current job.
“I believe my background makes me uniquely qualified to understand our clients' needs and challenges. I believe that everyone needs someone who believes in them, and I’m grateful to be in a position to give back to the community,” she said.
Kayleigh's work at Bethel’s Center for Strong Families is creating sustainable jobs and bringing hope to the people she serves. She treats her clients with dignity and respect, and her clients' success is a testament to the value of her work.
