Your Gift Cares for PeopleLiving confined to a wheelchair can pose many challenges. For Dorothy, living in a home that was not wheelchair-accessible posed more challenges. Confined to a wheelchair by Muscular Dystrophy, Dorothy was often forced to sleep in her chair because she could not maneuver it into her bedroom. Dorothy is one of approximately 117,000 people in Pierce County with a disability. It is estimated that more than 25,000 people with disabilities live under the federal poverty level here. Dorothy sought help from the local Salvation Army, one of many programs funded by UWPC. A caseworker helped her find resources that could equip her chair to recline, making sleeping more comfortable. They also helped her find an apartment suited for her wheelchair. Thanks to your gift to United Way of Pierce County, Dorothy obtained help to maintain her independence. Your gift helped 1,467 people live on their own.
